Paintings of Votives | ||||||
|
These are votives, mostly painted on wood, which come from Southern Germany, Northern Italy, Southern Tyrol, Austria and the German-speaking parts of Switzerland. The text is in German and most of them are from 1800-1900. Such votives mostly show the saint and also the favor requested, so it can be Odilia/Ottilie,Odile, or Saint Lucia/Lucy, or another; then you can also see what she is asked. Often they painted just a pair of eyes on it, so that means she or he is cured of whatever eye problem and the date this is occurring. Sometimes also a church may be depicted. These were painted mostly by a local painter. |
