The Altarpiece of the „Seven Sorrows of Mary“, Albrecht Durer, 1496-97, The
central panel is at Alte Pinakothek, Münich, Germany. The side panels (seven
of them) are at the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen
Dresden. The central panel became property of the state c. 1804. It was once
made for the chapel of Wittenberg Castle of the elector Frederick the Wise.
During the reformation the panel was sewn in single scenes; the central part
with the Madonna went to southern Germany (Monastery of Benediktbeuren),
while the individual scenes survived in Protestant Saxony. |
